Impossible to possible: a novel that became a living platform
A novel that became a living platform: read five minutes at a time on any phone, a guide from the story who never spoils it, strangers who meet only on the line they both kept, and a publishing engine that grows the audience every morning on its own.
The brief
On paper it was impossible. Take a finished novel of self-discovery and make it something people live with, not just read. It had to read like a book on a phone. Strangers had to meet, but only over the exact line they both kept, privately and safely. A character from the story had to talk with readers without ever spoiling it. The platform had to publish, find its readers and sell in four currencies by itself, with no feed and no likes, and stay calm. eORB designed it, built it and runs it.
A reading room built for the phone
- Sixty-four scenes of about five minutes each. A reader's place is kept on every device.
- Every scene can be read aloud with the device's own voice.
- Tap a sentence to keep it. Kept lines are collected in a personal studio.
- Type size, spacing, typeface and light or dark, all set by the reader.
The wheel: readers who stopped on the same line
- A ring of lights. Each light is a reader holding a line they kept, with what they want to say about it.
- Tap a light to read it; answer, and two people are talking. Only readers who kept the same line can reach each other, and nobody else can read the conversation.
- Lights go out after seven days. Each chapter has a room that opens only once a reader has finished that chapter, so nothing is spoiled.
- A kindness gate checks every message before it is sent, and moderation keeps a written record that cannot be edited afterwards.
The Ascent
- At the end of each chapter: four lines from the book and one question, “which is loudest in you today?”
- At the end of the book, each reader gets their own path: seven lines, one from each chapter, and a private note.
A guide from the story
- A character from the novel that readers can ask about any line, or about their own life and work. He answers with a question, not advice.
- He has read only as far as the reader, so he cannot spoil anything. He is clearly labelled as AI wherever people talk to him.
A platform that grows its own audience
- Every morning, with no one pressing anything: an essay answering a real reader question, each quote checked word for word against the book before it is published.
- New pages for the book's lines, marked up so search engines and AI assistants can cite them.
- A scout that finds conversations where the book belongs and drafts replies for a person to send.
- A weekly check of whether AI assistants cite the site, and a one-email morning report.
Commerce, done calmly
- One plan, by the year. Checkout goes straight to Stripe in one step.
- Prices in four currencies, with checks that the card matches the region.
- Refunds with one press within 30 days. Gifts, invitations and a year that can be given to a reader who cannot pay.
An owner's desk
- Every sentence on the site is editable, with full version history and preview before publishing.
- Prices, moderation, letters and the publishing engine, all in one place, with two-factor sign-in for the owner.
How it is made
- Server-rendered Node.js and PostgreSQL. Row-level security decides what each reader may see, inside the database itself.
- Stripe for payments: no card data ever touches the site.
- Docker and Caddy on a single server, with automatic HTTPS.
- Consent is asked only where the law requires it.
- 3,800+ automated checks before every release: money paths, who-can-see-what security, contrast and readability in both themes, phone layouts on five devices, every email rendered.
- A light, calm interface, with one slow moment of light per page, switched off for anyone who asks for less motion.
Where it is now
Live since October 2026, running every day without anyone pressing a button: a new essay each morning, quotes checked word for word against the book, a weekly check of whether AI assistants cite it, and one report email.
